Too bad it’s absolute horsepuck to try and play. A timer appears for these sections, as if to ask “is this what you want? Validation? Extrinsic challenges to overcome?” Given that there is no penalty for death in these sections, it’s actually more sensible and productive to simply fall back into the void: Ice Climber is about the journey, not the destination. The final stretch is considered a bonus level that is so difficult that the game expects you to fail. Otherwise, they pay you no heed.Įven the level design seems to mock or deconstruct the typical video game ideals of “victory” and “completion.” Each level actually ends about halfway up each mountain. Ice Climber acknowledges the external impact our internal conflicts can have while also acknowledging that nature is not a passive observer of this process: the yeti “enemies” who populate the peaks rebuild the steppes you so brazenly bust through during your personal path skyward. To do so, you invariably end up destroying it: your ascension requires you to demolish the icy peak itself. Climbing solo without ropes, the Canadian adventurer would scale stratospheric walls of ice that could crack and fall with one wrong move.
